Miss Latin America 1980
Acapulco Mexico always will remember the day on November 30, 1980, because it was celebrated for first time a Continental Beauty Pageant in that city, where many countries than ever of America participated in the contest, except Nicaragua and Cuba, where Ana María García Gamboa of Mexico won.
Previous this international pageant Ana María “Anita” won the seventh edition of Miss National Tourism 1980 representing its home State, Yucatán, in México. This contest begun in 1974 to stand out the beauty and culture of Mexican women competing in National Costume, fashion and evening gown but non in bathing suit, second place went to Miss Tourism Zacatecas Sandra Venosdtan, third place went to Miss Tourism Jalisco Alejandra Ledesma Torreblanca.

Anita, 19 years old, blonde, green eyes, 1.70 mts. tall, got preparation during about 1 year; moreover she had a good education since a little girl and lived abroad that’s why she speaks several languages.
Once she won the Miss National Tourism title, she crosses the country promoting tourism as one of her duties.
On November 30, 1980 in the paradisiacal Acapulco took place the final night of Miss Latin America in Plaza International Hotel, Miss Mexico Ana María Gamboa won among 18 contenders, the event was aired on 300 millions people from New York to Chile.
The second place went to Peru’s Mariela Georgina Monier, third place went to Puerto Rico’s Agnes Tañon Correa (top 12 at Miss Universe), the rest of the finalist were the contestants of Paraguay Martha Gally; Costa Rica Barbara Bonilla; Colombia Arleth Patricia Casado; Chile Gloria Pusic and Venezuela, Magaly Aguila.

Two years later she married with Mario Fernando Ancona, they have 3 children, one of them is Mariana Ancona García who was Miss Yucatan 2005 and participated in Miss Mexico Pageant.

Nowadays Ana María is a respectable woman in Merida Yucatán, Mexico who for several years was the Director of Miss Yucatan.
