Countries with 1 Miss Universe

 

In few months a new Miss Universe will be chosen, let’s know those countries with just 1 Miss Universe title, let’s met the women who made proud an entire nation.

 

FRANCE,  Christiane Magnani (Miss Universe 1953)

Christiane born in Paris, she was the second Miss Universe in the history, elected on July 17, 1953 in Long Beach, California, USA, after give up the crown she went to Mexico to make movies; there she met Miguel Alemán Velasco (son of former President of Mexico, Miguel Alemán Valdés), they got married and have 4 children one of them is the current owner of airline “Interjet”.

Since Christiane’s triumph, France has not reached the crown not even has reached the finals, just semi-finals.

 

 

 

PERU, Gladys Zender Urbina (Miss Universe 1957)

Gladys was elected Miss Universe at 17 years old on July 19, 1957 in Long Beach, USA, she almost loses the crown because of her age, the directors of the Miss Universe pageant call to an urgent meeting lasted about 2 hours and a half, finally the directors reach an agreement and decided that they would allow her to continue with the Miss Universe title since she was only a few months away to turn 18 years old (October 19th).

In her official welcome home on August 11, 1957, was declared as national day. Since then nobody Peruvian has been finalist, just semi-finalist.

 

 

 

 

 

 

COLOMBIA, Luz Marina Zuluaga (Miss Universe 1958)

Luz Marina is a celebrity in Colombia, she was crown as Miss Universe on July 26, 1958 in Long Beach, USA. Nevertheless, she is the first runner up of Miss Colombia, Doris Gil Santamaria who rejected the title because of she married. Luz Marina travel to USA, being the first time that Colombia would compete and won!.

Colombia has been very close to conquer the crown again; the first time was in 1992 with Paola Turbay who was first runner up, in 1993 Paula Andrea Betancourt with a first runner up place also and in 1994 with Carolina Gomez who was first runner up too!!!

 

 

 

JAPAN, Akiko Kojima (Miss Universe 1959)

On July 24, 1959, Akiko was elected Miss Universe in Long Beach, USA, became the first Asian to conquer the coveted title. After give up the crown she married. Since Akiko’s triumphs nobody had reached the crown until Kurara Chibana almost won the pageant in 2006, she was first runner up.

GERMANY, Marlene Schmidt (Miss Universe 1961)

Crowned on July 15, 1961 in Miami, USA,  after her reigning she made dozens movies, she married with actor Ty Hardin and in 1996 they decided to divorce, they have 1 daughter.

 

Germany was very close to the crown for second time, it was in 1977 with Marie-Luise Gassen who placed four.

 

 

 

 

 

 

ARGENTINA, Norma Beatriz Nolan (Miss Universe 1962)

This beautiful Argentine with Irish and Italian roots,  got the Miss Universe title on July 14, 1962 in Miami, USA. After her reigning she has a very private life. Since 1962 just once Argentina has reached the crown and it was in 1970 with Beatriz Martha Gross who placed fifth.

 

 

 

GREECE, - Kiriaki (Corinna) Tsopei  (Miss Universe 1964)

Kiriaki was crowned on August 1st. 1964 in Miami, USA, after her reigning has been judge several times in the Pageant , she also made many movies and tv shows in USA as A Man Called Horse, Daniel Boone, Lost in Space, Valley of  the Dolls and A Guide for the Married Man.

She founded an organization to help children with Leukaemia, she us currently married. The last time Greece had been close to win again was in 2001 with Evelina Papantoniou who was first runner up.

 

 

 

LEBANON, Georgina Rizk (Miss Universe 1971)

On Juy 24, 1971 for first time a Muslin woman was crowned as Miss Universe wearing a top and hotpants as a evening gown. Georgina was married to Ali Hassan Salameh, a Palestinian militant with Black September (known for the kidnap and murder of eleven Israeli athletes and officials during Olympics Games in Munich)

Georgina was not allowed to attend the Miss Universe Pageant next year where she would give up the crown  due to government restrictions. Georgina Rizk is currently married to renowned Lebanese singer Walid Toufic.

Since then, Lebanon has had just 1 semifinalist, it was in 1973 with Marcelle Herro.

 

 

 

 

SPAIN, Amparo Muñoz Quesada (Miss Universe 1974)

July 19, 1974 is elected in Manila Philippines, Amparo  Muñoz the first woman who defied the organization and resigned the title – even it is not in records –

Living through a life of excesses and making films where she has to make nudes, Amparo reached the fame in Spain and Mexico. Her book “la vida es el precio” (The life is the price) is on sale where she tells everything about her life but not much about herself as Miss Universe.

Spain has been  close to the crown again in 1985 with Teresa Sanchez who was first runner up.

 

 

 

ISRAEL, Rina Messinger (Miss Universe 1976)

Rina was crowned on July 10, 1976 in Hong Kong, Upon her proclamation as the winner, she remarked, "I'm no politician. I think my being Miss Universe will show people that Israel has another side, not only war." Today, Rina Mor-Goder is a lawyer and mother to two daughters.

Since then Israel has had 3 semifinalist, in 1978, 2001 and 2005.

 

 

 

SOUTH AFRICA, Margaret Gardiner (Miss Universe 1978)

On July 24, 1978 happened something unusual during Margaret’s crowning in Acapulco Mexico. She was crowned by a black woman, Jenny Commissiong (Miss Universe 1977) on years where South Africa was known as the most racist in the world, the news spread out the world.

South Africa almost wins again in 1984 with Leticia (Tisha) Snyman who was first runner up.

 

 

 

 

NEW ZELAND, Lorraine Elizabeth Downes (Miss Universe 1983)

Lorraine was crowned on July 11, 1983 in St. Louis, USA. In 1985 Lorraine Downes married Murray Mexted, a New Zealand rugby, with whom she had two children, before divorcing in 1997. After years of relative anonymity, Downes competed in the New Zealand version of Dancing with the Stars in 2006 with dance partner Aaron Gilmore. The couple won the competition in July 2006.

Since 1983 New Zealand has had 1 semifinalist, in 1992 with Lisa Maree De Montalk.

 

 

CHILE, Cecilia Carolina Bolocco Fonck (Miss Universe 1987)

On May 26, 1987 was crowned Cecilia in Singapore, so far the only Chilean to have the coveted title, Bolocco has made many TV shows all with great success, she has won 2 Emmy awards, she is a celebrity in Chile, she married ex President of  Argentina Carlos Menem with whom she had her first child (Máximo) ending 2003. Since Cecilia’s triumph 3 Chileans has made semi-finalist in 1989, 1990 (finalist) and 2004.

 

 

HOLLAND, Angela Visser  (Miss Universe 1989)

Crowned on May 23, 1989 in Cancun, Mexico, Angela is considered by experts as the most beautiful Miss Universe of all times, after give up the crown she was co- host of Miss Universe since 1991 until 1994. She made several movies and TV shows in USA. Nowadays she is happy mother. Angela attends the Miss World Pageant 1988 where she passed unnoticed.

Holland almost reaches the crown again in 1991 with Pauline Huizinga who was first runner up.

 

 

NORWAY, Mona Grudt (Miss Universe 1990)

Mona was crowned on April 15, 1990 in Los Angeles, USA. She is a star in Norwegian tv , she is the editor of magazine “Ditt Bryllup” (your wedding), she is the host of Miss Norway since 2000, a recognized model in Scandinavia, she is owner of boutiques called MGB (Mona Grudt Boutique). Norway since 1990 has had 2 semi-finalists, in 2004 and 2005.

 

 

 

 

MEXICO, Lupita Jones (Miss Universe 1991)

Lupita was crowned on May 17, 1991 in Las Vegas, USA. After her reigning she got the franchise for Miss Mexico in Miss Universe, being the national director since 1994. On May 2006 was honoured with a figure of wax in the Museum of Wax of Mexico City, becoming the first Miss Universe in the history to be honoured in that way.

Mexico almost reaches the crown again in 2005 with Laura Elizondo who was 3rd. runner up.

 

 

 

 

NAMIBIA, Michelle McLean (Miss Universe 1992)

On May 8, 1992 Michelle was elected as Miss Universe in Bangkok, Thailand in a spectacular show, it was the first time that Namibia was semi-finalist and won. In 1992, Michelle founded the Michelle McLean Children's Trust in Namibia which focuses on the education and care of underprivileged children. Michelle has since married her longtime boyfriend, Neil Bierbaum. Since Michelle’s triumph Namibia has had just 1 semifinalist in 2003 with Ndapewa Alfons.

 

 

BOTSWANA, Mpule Keneilwe Kwelagobe (Miss Universe 1999)

On may 26, 1999, happened the most sensational crowning reaction in the history, on incontrollable emotions was crowned Mpule of Botswana, it was the first time that Botswana take part in Miss Universe and won!!!. She took part in Miss World 1997 also where she passed unnoticed.

She receives the Jonathan Mann Human Rights Award, she was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Population Fund in February 2000. Mpule established a foundation dedicated to combating AIDS. Since Mpule’s triumph nobody was able to make the semi-finals.

 

 

 

RUSSIA AND PANAMA, Oxana Fedorova and Justine Pasek Patiño (Miss Universe 2002)

Oxana was chosen Miss Universe in Puerto Rico on May 29, 2002, she is recognized as one of the most beautiful miss universe of all history. During the pageant she made the highest score in swimsuit competition since 1952. But on September 24, 2002 she was dethroned for failing to perform the numerous duties expected of a Miss Universe titleholder. The crown was passed on to Panama's Justine Pasek, the first runner-up, who consequently became her country's first Miss Universe.

 

 

Justine, a Panamian born in Ucraine, daugther of a Polish father and Panamian mother became Miss Universe 2002, “I am a world citizen” says Justine during the final night of Miss Universe. Donald Trump co-owner of Miss Universe crowned Justine in New York facing a dozens of journalist.

Since 2002, Russia has had 1 semi-finalist in 2005 with Anna Litvinova and Panama has had one too in 2003 with Stefanie de Roux Martin.

 

 

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, Victoria Amelia Vega Polanco (Miss Universe 2003)

On June 3, 2003 in Panama was crowned Amelia, a statuesque woman who was favourite since the beginning, daughter of former Miss Dominican Rep. Patricia Polanco who took part in Miss World 1980 and daughter of a doctor. Amelia is the Miss Universe who has collected more money for the organization so far. Her face has appeared in many magazines in all American Continent. Dominican Rep. was very close to conquer de crown again in 2005 with Renata Soñé who place 2nd. runner up.
